Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Celia Cruz, a voice that transcended borders and generations. From her exile, Celia carried Cuba in her heart and turned her art into a symbol of freedom, resilience, and identity for millions around the world, being a firm opponent of the Castro regime. Her music reminds us that culture can be an act of resistance and that joy, too, can be political.
Paradoxically, in Cuba, the regime has censored a tribute at the Fábrica de Arte Cubano that sought to celebrate her legacy. More than six decades after her exile, Celia continues to be an uncomfortable figure for those in power, who never forgave her for defending her right to think and sing freely.
Her image — vibrant, radiant, and defiant — still represents everything censorship tries to erase: the indestructible power of art and truth.

Hoy celebramos el centenario del nacimiento de Celia Cruz, una voz que trascendió fronteras y generaciones. Desde su exilio, Celia llevó a Cuba en el corazón y convirtió su arte en un símbolo de libertad, resiliencia e identidad para millones en el mundo, siendo una firme oponente al régimen castrista. Su música nos recuerda que la cultura también puede ser un acto de resistencia, y que la alegría, a veces, es profundamente política.
Paradójicamente, en Cuba, el régimen ha censurado un homenaje en la Fábrica de Arte Cubano que buscaba rendir tributo a su legado. A más de seis décadas de su exilio, Celia continúa siendo una figura incómoda para el poder, que nunca le perdonó haber defendido su derecho a pensar y cantar en libertad.
Su imagen —viva, luminosa y rebelde— sigue representando todo lo que la censura intenta borrar: la fuerza indestructible del arte y la verdad.

Ferrer, founder of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) and one of the strongest voices in defense of human rights and freedom on the island, embodies the courage and sacrifice of Cuba’s political prisoners.
His story holds a prominent place in our temporary exhibition dedicated to the events of July 11, 2021, honoring those who raised their voices for a free Cuba.

The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora has quickly become the cultural heart of Cuban Miami, featuring live theater, performing arts, and rotating exhibits that celebrate the greatest artists and thinkers of the Cuban Diaspora, telling stories that cross borders.
Its upcoming permanent exhibit honors the courage of those who, with cries of “Viva Cristo Rey,” chose to die standing rather than live kneeling, endured imprisonment for speaking out, or built new lives as exiles, “sin patria, pero sin amo.”
Through this exhibit, visitors will recognize the threats to freedom today by exploring how a once-prosperous Cuba fell to dictatorship, and the enduring struggle to rebuild. At its core, the exhibit celebrates the American Dream, reflecting an immigrant community that thrives in America, cherishes its adopted home, and believes in its promise as a beacon of hope.
